What this course covers

Control hazardous energy before you reach into a machine

  • The hazard: how stored or unexpectedly released energy — electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, thermal — causes crushing, amputation and electrocution during service and maintenance.
  • The sequence: prepare for shutdown, shut the machine down, isolate the energy, apply locks and tags, release stored energy, then verify zero energy before work begins.
  • Group lockout, shift changes, and the difference between an authorized and an affected employee — and why a tag alone is a warning, not an isolating device.
Stored energySprings, capacitors, pressure, gravity
Apply lock and tagOne worker, one lock, one key

What the course does — and what stays with your employer

This course builds awareness of the control-of-hazardous-energy standard and how lockout/tagout works. It does not replace your employer’s written energy-control program, the machine-specific procedures for the equipment you work on, or the hands-on verification that makes someone an authorized employee on that equipment.

These are hazard-awareness and workplace-training courses. They are not OSHA Outreach Training Program courses and do not result in a DOL card, which only an OSHA-authorized trainer can issue. Completing a course supports your employer’s compliance with the standard it covers; it does not by itself make anyone authorized, competent or certified to operate equipment. EHSTEC is not affiliated with or endorsed by OSHA.
