Break the job into steps, name the hazard at each step, write down the control that makes it safe, and get it signed off — as a form your crews complete in the field, not a document nobody opens.
Same discipline, different house style
Job Hazard Analysis and Job Safety Analysis describe closely related processes, and most organizations use whichever term their industry settled on — JSA is more common in construction, JHA in general industry and in OSHA's own guidance booklet. They are not universally identical: some programs treat a JSA as the narrower, task-level document and reserve JHA for a broader analysis. EHSTEC does not force a definition on you.
What it gives you is the structure both share — a task, its steps, the hazard at each step, the control that addresses it — as an editable form. If your organization calls it a JSA, rename it. If your process needs a residual-risk column or a permit reference, add the question. The shipped template is a starting point, not a constraint.
Job, steps, hazards, controls
- Job details first: the task, the location or area, the date, and the supervisor or competent person responsible for it.
- Then the analysis itself — for each task step, the potential hazards, a risk level of Low, Medium or High, and the controls or safe work procedure that address them.
- Required PPE is selected from a list — hard hat, eye protection, gloves, hi-vis, fall protection, respirator — so the answer is consistent between crews instead of free text.
- A closing check asks explicitly whether all hazards have adequate controls in place, which is the question a JHA exists to answer.
A signature, captured on the device
- The review and approval step captures a real signature on screen, attached to that specific analysis.
- The completed JHA is stored as a response you can find later — by job, by location or by date — rather than as a scan in a folder.
- Because it is a form, the same analysis can be re-run for the next occurrence of the job instead of being rewritten from scratch.
- If the analysis surfaces something that needs fixing before work can start, it can raise a corrective action with an owner and a due date.
What the software does and does not do
EHSTEC supports consistent hazard-analysis documentation: the same structure every time, completed in the field, stored where you can retrieve it, and signed by the person who approved it. That consistency is what makes a JHA program auditable.
It does not decide whether your analysis is adequate. Identifying the hazards in a task, judging the risk and choosing controls are engineering and supervisory judgements made by competent people. No form can make an incomplete analysis complete, and we would not claim otherwise.
